Two natural enemies registered in Japan
(Written on May 13,1996)
Encarsia formosa and Phytoseiulus persimilis were registered in March, 1995
in Japan. In Japan, natural enemies are regarded as pesticides and regulated by
the pesticide regulation law.
There are of course some opinions that the regulation should be laxed but at this
moment one should observe the existing laws.
Even though natural enemies were registered after 4 years glasshouse bioefficacy
trials, they can only be used on registered crop, i.e. Encarsia formosa against
Trialeurodes vaporariorum on tomato, Phytoseiulus persimilis against Tetranychus
urticae on strawberries, utterly different situation from European countries and
U.S.A.
The sales so far is no so surprising but covers 200 ha of tomato house out
of 6000 ha tomato in Japan. Growers and field researchers are longing for early
registration of Diglyphus isaea and Dacnusa sibirica. Phytoseiulus is poor sales
results. Reasons are mainly that most miticides are still effective enough against
glasshouse living Tetranychus urticae.
